Aim high. Reach your full potential. Demonstrate courage, honesty, integrity, and appreciation. Isn’t this how we want young people to learn and grow into fulfilled adults?
There’s a facility in Frisco where these values are the foundation upon which every class is designed. Samurai-Inti Martial Arts is developing the next generation of kind, courageous, healthy, patient, and responsible leaders — not just fighters.
“We teach to protect joy.”
Samurai-Inti teaches traditional martial arts, including karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but as Head Instructor and Owner, Sebastian Mejias explains, they’re teaching so much more.
We do not just teach fighting. We teach to protect joy. We teach our students how to recognize and deal with anything that threatens their self-esteem. We teach how to not take things personally, and we teach to be responsible because of self-motivation.
— Sebastian Mejias, Head Instructor and Owner, Samurai-Inti Martial Arts
Sebastian and his family are proud immigrants from South America (Chile), who moved to the United States 21 years ago. Through hard work together as a family, always with respect and honor, they feel blessed and honored to be realizing the American dream.
“Follow the path that makes your heart rejoice.”
They started Samurai-Inti Martial Arts with the goal to share what they’ve learned through Martial Arts: passion, perseverance, dedication, and the sacrifice to win. They believe God gave them a mission to teach children, and this is how they follow their path — the path of the heart.
He expanded on this idea as a speaker at the inaugural TedXFrisco in early 2020. Sebastian shared that it takes true courage to follow the path that makes your heart rejoice.
This school’s philosophy — “the way of the heart” — means students learn to protect themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.
At its core, Samurai-Inti wants students to be protectors of their joy, so they can open up and expand their self-esteem and confidence. The goal is for students to not be afraid to aim high and reach their full potential.
With Sebastian and his staff’s passion for martial arts, they teach students to fall in love with the self-development process that’s an innate part of martial arts.
“In a world full of fear and chaos, we like to be a breath of fresh air.”
A few Sebastian’s credentials include a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Carlos Machado, 4th Degree Black Belt under Mr. Freddie Poole, Black Sash in Wing Chun Kung Fu from Sifu Pham, Muay Thai Practitioner, and Certified Personal Trainer from the Cooper Institute of Dallas.
We believe that the world is a mirror of who we are inside. For this reason, we help people set up pillars for their life, such as exercise, nutrition, breathing practices, fun, and self-protection skills. In a world full of fear and chaos, we like to be a breath of fresh air. We teach about love in the form of self-esteem. From there we develop courage, and with that, honesty, integrity, and appreciation. This is the foundation of our teachings.
The recent months have been all but normal for this Frisco business, but they’re continuing to focus on what’s good for the kids. Online classes are offered six days a week, as well as in-person classes.
The online classes allow the instructors to continue to educate people on how to boost their immune system, eat healthy, and exercise, all while bringing some light and hope in the comfort of their own home. They’re mastering the art of Zoom meetings, social media communication, and complementing their training on their YouTube channel.
“Online classes have brought families together at home.”
The shift to “shelter in place” won’t stop Samurai-Inti from creating the next generation of leaders and instructors. The students who have been training there for years are expected to help teach the little ones what they’ve learned. After all, the best way to teach is by example.
Online classes have brought families together at home, father and mother working with their kids, older kids helping young siblings. It’s beautiful to see and we can say it’s been the most positive aspect of this adaptation.
