WEEKLY SCORES AND SCHEDULE
Week one of the 2017 Frisco Texas High School Football Season is now in the books, and with eight-of-nine* schools kicking off 2017 with district games, Frisco fans can get an early glimpse into what could be an interesting playoff picture.
But not so fast, because whether your fave team took a week one loss on the chin, or beams broadly with that undefeated smile, much can happen in the upcoming nine weeks.
Here’s a quick look at who won, who lost, and how your favorite Frisco team may fare in Week 2.
District 13-5A
Centennial (1-0) VS Frisco (0-1)—31-21
Frisco’s flexbone was fine, as the Raccoons rushed for 351 yards to the Titans’ 214. The determining factor in Frisco’s first-week loss was simply that the Centennial Titans produced a more balanced attack.
Centennial’s signal-caller, Weston Symes, connected on a 41-yard strike to WR Reece Bartles for an important first quarter TD pass that tied the game up 7-7. From that point forward, in spite of surrendering two third-quarter Frisco TDs, the Titans efficiently kept the game in check, thanks to a salty defense that would bend, but not break.
Frisco’s Heath Yetter (117 yds, TD) and Bryson Clemons (61 yds, TD) each had solid games for the ‘Coons, but, couldn’t capitalize on a Titan’s defense that made the proper adjustments in the fourth quarter to seal their win.
Up Next (Frisco): VS Denison (1-0)
The Raccoons will need to minimize Week 1’s mistakes, as they had nine penalties for 91 yards and two turnovers as they fell to Centennial. To beat Denison, they’ll need to establish their strong running attack that glimpsed greatness in last week’s third quarter, from the get-go, to put pressure on a Yellowjackets defense that allowed just 144 yards last week.
Up Next (Centennial): Lake Dallas (0-1)
Don’t let the record fool you as the Lake Dallas Falcons are always a formidable foe. With a week one win in the ledger for the Titans, look for Centennial to improve their passing efficiency while maintaining their solid ground attack.
Lone Star (1-0) VS Heritage (0-1)—41-20
Rangers QB M.J. Rivers (114 yds passing, TD), in his first start under center for Lone Star, proved more than capable of running the show at the 5A level. However, this was an old-fashioned game grinded out on the turf, as the Rangers took full advantage of the fleet feet of Rangers RB Kirby Bennett III (244 yds rushing, 4 TDs) who provided enough offense alone for an easy opening week win. Heritage’s Amare Jones continues to prove he’s the real deal, as he passed for 93 yds and two TDs, and garnered 133 yards on the ground for another score.
Up Next (Heritage): @ Colleyville Heritage (0-1)
In spite of the loss, the Coyotes’ 318 total yards against a tough Rangers defense provided proof they can hang a crooked number on the opposition’s defense. Colleyville Heritage’s Jagger Laroe’s lone interception marred an otherwise solid outing, as he completed 13 passes for 148 yards against the perennial state champion Aledo Bearcats. For the Panthers to pull off a win, they’ll need more help from a defense that surrendered 401 week 1 yards.
Up Next (Lone Star): @ Mansfield Timberview (1-0)
The Timberview Wolves blew out an overmatched Everman team from the first whistle until the last. If there is a chink in their week one armor though, it may be a defense that did surrender 203 rushing yards against the Bulldogs. This will likely be an offensive shootout of epic proportions, with two of the area’s premier offenses slugging it out punch or punch.
Reedy (1-0) @ Independence (0-1)—17-14
An opening battle between District 13-5A’s two newest schools turned out to be one of the best games of week one. That is, through the first half of play at least. If you went to get nachos and got lost, say, for a couple of hours, you wouldn’t have missed a thing—aside from stellar defense—as the second half produced no points, with the 17-14 Lions’ midpoint lead enough to hold up for the final.
Reedy’s QB Josh Foskey (199 yds passing, 2 TDs) stood out in a defensive battle that saw the Knights’ fate sealed in the fourth quarter when they were unable to put a would-be game-tying field goal through the uprights.
Up Next (Reedy): VS NW Eaton (1-0)
The Eaton Eagles easily dispatched the upstart Braswell Bengals last week, but they’ll have their hands full with the impressive youngsters at Reedy, who are off to a hot start after a 2016 rookie campaign that garnered them an impressive three wins.
Up Next (Independence): VS Denton Braswell (0-1)
Uber newbie, the Braswell Bengals of Denton, will be looking for not only their first win of the season but their initial win in their young existence. Problem is, the Knights, a well-stocked playoff team from a year ago are as well, and they’re still steamed from last week’s close loss to second-year Reedy.
Wakeland (1-0) VS Liberty (0-1)—51-17
The Wakeland Wolverines were on the right side of a 34-point blowout over Liberty RedHawks. It didn’t take long for the Wolverines to establish dominance, as a Colby Delashaw (181 yds, 2 TDs) 37-yard first quarter run set the tone for a Wakeland team that would be up 21-0 after just one quarter of play. The RedHawks’ offense was led by QB Mitchell Miller, who rushed for 61 yards on the way to a nice overall game where he contributed 146 total yards of offense.
Up Next (Wakeland): VS Lovejoy (0-1)
It’s likely safe to assume that the Wolverines won’t put up 560 yards of total offense against the Leopards of Lovejoy. However, it needs to be noted that Lovejoy did surrender 42 points last week as well as 437 yards.
Up Next (Liberty): VS Sherman (0-1)
Just as Wakeland will be hard-pressed to repeat week one’s epic offensive show, the RedHawks are sure to rack up more than 170 total yards on offense against a Sherman squad that allowed 42 points in their inaugural game of the season several days ago.
TAPPS 1-II
*Frisco Legacy Christian (0-0)
2017 Season Opener: Fri., Sept. 8 @ John Paul II (0-1)
The Legacy Christian Eagles get their season going against a John Paul team that produced 20 points, thanks to 253 total yards, but fell just short to Carrollton Prince of Peace, in their Week 1 27-20 loss.
