I cook a lot at home but once a week we try to venture out to a family friendly place. Somewhere that is convenient, won’t break the bank and maybe has some distraction for the kids (other than a slide in a fast food restaurant).
A local friend stumbled across a new restaurant recently and couldn’t say enough good things about it. A gem for sports enthusiasts but their menu and style is also very much aimed at catering for families. Woody’s Sports Bar sits in a great location at Main and FM 423, thereby accessible to Frisco, Little Elm and the Colony residents.
Our family of four arrived on a Tuesday evening and were immediately greeted by friendly staff and seated in a busy but spacious dining room area. Seeing other families comfortable and enjoying the atmosphere presented a good first impression. It was obvious this eatery had certainly become a local neighborhood favorite. My 8 year old quickly spotted the kids room which provides FREE arcade games.
While Woody’s menu consists of typical classic American fare and favorites, they also offer healthy options like salmon, lettuce wraps and a host of great salads.
Our waitress was attentive from the minute we sat down and helped us with some menu questions. She also made sure our girl’s meals were delivered first, kudos to her for recognizing a key tip for families wanting to enjoy a stress free meal.
My first time there I decided to take in all Woody’s has to offer. There is something fun for all ages and interests throughout the week. Just take a look at the variety of options:
- Monday & Wednesday – two people can dine for $19.99
- Tuesdays – Karaoke night and Buy One Get One Free Wings
- Wednesdays – Family Games night
- Thursday – $3 all day Happy Hour
- Friday – Free Chips & Salsa/Queso from 3 to 7pm
- Saturday – Kids Eat Free 12 to 4pm during the summer.
- Sunday – bring your church bulletin for Free Chips & Queso/Salsa with your meal.
- Lunchtime trivia every day from 11 – 2 p.m.
Opting for the grilled Salmon as an entrée, however, I couldn’t pass the potato skins by as an appetizer. The food arrived promptly to our table and did not disappoint. The salmon was cooked to perfection, accompanied by crisp steamed vegetables. I wasn’t honestly sure about the waitress suggestion of Spanish rice as a side but it was light and delicious, perfect companion for fish. My two girls, picky eaters at the best of times had no complaints with their meals either.
Halfway through our dinner the Kids Karaoke started and what a treat that was. The guy hosting was a lot of fun, encouraging the little ones to choose their song and managed to convince my three year old that a rendition of the ABC’s was exactly what we all needed to hear. She belted out that tune to a round of applause and even stayed on stage for some Twinkle Twinkle, while her sister clapped along. It was really good family fun!
If that’s not your thing, Woody’s is considered a big sport-watching bar and there is a separate area with high stools, tables equipped with and four 10’ projection screens and 11 HD flat screens. With football season about to start you can enjoy the game or event of the night in the comfort of great atmosphere, with a great selection of food and drink including 15 beers on tap.
Giving back to the community by supporting youth sports and school PTAs is a core belief for the owners of Woody’s Sports Restaurant, having daughters who are high school football cheerleaders for their local high school. They are always looking for schools to partner with for Spirit Night fundraisers, hosting them each Monday and Wednesday of the month, donating 15% of the sales to the school.
There are no frills to Woody’s but the atmosphere is cheerful, staff is friendly, the food is scrumptious for sure and all great value for a simple & delicious fun family meal out.
