Proudly known as Sports City USA, Frisco has long been celebrated for its iconic sports teams and world-class facilities. But beyond the familiar roar of football and the cheers from the baseball stands, a new wave of sports is sweeping through our city, bringing fresh excitement and energy.
From cricket bats and badminton to pickleball paddles and banana ball, Frisco continues to offer residents and visitors diverse ways to play, compete, and stay active.
Cricket’s Rising Popularity
Whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious newcomer, cricket offers a refreshing change from the usual competition. The sport has a passionate following in Frisco and weekend matches are a common sight. Much like the rise of youth soccer over the last 30 years, cricket’s popularity is undeniable, both across the country and of course, in Sports City USA.
Where to play: New leagues and state-of-the-art facilities are popping up all over North Texas. In Frisco, you’ll find public cricket pitches at Northeast Community Park and Independence Parkway Practice Field, while B.F. Phillips Community Park hosts youth leagues. (Rumor has it there might be a new facility opening near downtown Frisco, but we’re unsure of its status.) You can also check out these options:
- Frisco Community Cricket: A small but dedicated cricket club that offers cricket classes to all ages. They have recreational training for all levels of ability, from beginners to competitive cricket players.
- Cricket Arena Frisco: Cricket Arena Frisco was founded by a group of cricket enthusiasts passionate about promoting and growing the sport in the area. They offer outdoor, net-covered lanes (lit at night) available for booking. Family memberships are $100/month.
- Crown Cricket Academy: In partnership with Play Frisco and Allen Parks and Recreation, they’re dedicated to fostering a love for cricket through diverse youth programs for boys and girls, starting at 4 years old.
- Play Frisco Leagues: Adult league seasons begin in March and August, with matches scheduled on weekends at the Northeast Community Park cricket pitches.
Pickleball: The Fastest-Growing Sport in America
A delightful blend of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, pickleball is taking Frisco by storm. Its appeal lies in its accessibility—easy to learn, yet challenging enough to keep you hooked. Pickleball courts are sprouting up all over the city, and local clubs are welcoming players of all ages and skill levels. It’s the perfect sport for those looking to stay active and social.
Where to play:
City of Frisco facilities: Play Frisco offers free pickleball courts at Shawnee Trail Sports Complex (4) and Warren Sports Complex (8). It’s BYON (net) and first-come, first-serve unless you opt to make a reservation.
Frisco Athletic Center: The FAC offers 3 indoor pickleball courts for FAC Members and Day Pass or Pickleball Pass holders.
The Grove at Frisco Commons: Frisco’s active adult center has 2 outdoor pickleball courts. They’re reserved for Grove members Monday – Saturday from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. After 2 p.m. and all day on Sundays, the courts are open to walk-ins.
Frisco FieldhouseUSA: WIth open play and membership options, Fieldhouse has 9 indoor courts available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Frisco Flyers Pickleball Club: For leagues and lessons, the Frisco Flyers Sports & Event Center is more than just the go-to spot for volleyball. It’s also home to the Frisco Flyers Pickleball Club.
Frisco Pandas: Where are the Dude Perfect fans? We’re still trying to fully understand this, but here’s what we know so far: Dude Perfect + Dak Prescott + professional Pickleball must equal something awesome, right? Let’s all keep an eye on this and see where it goes.
Badminton: Not Just a Backyard Game
Badminton has shed its image as a casual backyard game and emerged as a competitive sport in Frisco. With dedicated facilities and growing interest, badminton is attracting players who appreciate its fast-paced, strategic nature. Whether you’re smashing shuttlecocks in a friendly match or competing in a local tournament, badminton offers a dynamic and engaging experience.
Where to play:
Frisco Badminton: The first facility built in the U.S. specifically for badminton, Frisco Badminton has 20 dedicated courts, all indoor and available 24/7 (with biometric access). The state-of-the-art facility features Olympic-level mats optimized for playing, 40-foot ceilings, and special lighting with specific height, angles, and brightness to meet Badminton World Federation standards. They offer memberships, open play, and tournaments.
Frisbee Golf: Precision Meets Playfulness in the Great Outdoors
Frisbee golf, or disc golf, is like regular golf but with a twist – instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you’re flinging a frisbee into a metal basket! Players navigate through courses filled with trees, ponds, and other obstacles, making each throw an adventure. It’s a perfect blend of skill, strategy, and a bit of luck, all while enjoying the great outdoors.
Where to play:
Dash’s Track Disc Golf Course: This 18-hole championship style disc golf course is located within B.F. Phillips Community Park. Access to and parking for this natural course is available from the far southwest end of the baseball complex parking lot.
McCord Park: Located along the Cottonwood Creek floodplain on FM 423, McCord Park is a wooded 38-acre park with gentle slopes, a creek, heavy tree cover, a fishing pond, and acres of open space. Amenities in the public park include an 18-hole disc golf course designed by John Houck, a world-renowned disc golf course designer.
Banana Ball: A New Twist on America’s Pastime
Move over, traditional baseball — Banana Ball is here to steal the spotlight! This quirky, fast-paced version of baseball has captured the attention of fans for its 11 unique rules and entertaining gameplay. Imagine a game where every inning is a sprint, and fans are as much a part of the action as the players. It’s baseball, but with a twist that keeps everyone on their toes.
Where to watch: Recently announced, the Texas Tailgaters are the newest Banana Ball team to join the pro league. In 2025, they’ll host headliner home games in Frisco, Round Rock, and San Antonio, where fans will get the full Tailgater experience and be a part of the Greatest Pregame in Sports.
