Ten Questions You Should Be Asking a CSA – Homewatch Caregivers

October 24, 2017 by Audra Balsley
Elder care

When it comes to finding exceptional home care for your parents or other loved ones, there are a variety of factors to consider. To make informed decisions, you should research and discuss all aspects of your loved one’s care before you choose a specific plan. The best way to learn about all of the home health care options available is by meeting with a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA). Homewatch Caregivers of Dallas understands that the process of transitioning your loved one into any type of assistive care can be overwhelming. That’s why they want to share this list of the top ten questions to ask a CSA when looking into home care.

1. Who will provide assistive home care for my loved one?

In some cases, friend and family resources are adequate in providing care, but there are those who will need outside help. Be sure to consider your loved one’s mobility and any chronic conditions, as well as temporary situations such as post-surgery recovery. Your CSA will be able to help you choose the best care plan and provide you will a list of local service providers.

2. Should I put my loved one into Senior Housing?

Many people believe that senior housing facilities always provide an adequate level of care. However, most of the time your loved one will need further assistance even if they move into senior housing. Your CSA will help you understand the different kinds of housing options available and work with you to determine which – if any – is right for your family.

3. Are there community services or organizations I should look into?

Depending on where you live, there may be a variety of community resources that your loved one can benefit from. A CSA can help you identify and reach out to these local groups.

4. How can I help my loved one maintain a healthy lifestyle?

A healthy nutrition and fitness regime will improve your loved one’s quality of life. You can work with your CSA to develop new healthy habits for your family member while also giving you tips for positively introducing them.

5. What if my loved one has a chronic illness?

Chronic illnesses and conditions are quite common among senior citizens. A CSA can help you understand your loved one’s medical needs and plan accordingly when it comes to home care.

6. Should I seek mental health treatment for my loved one?

A range of factors can contribute to depression and other mental struggles among senior citizens. In some cases, it can be hard to determine whether your relative’s behaviors are “normal.” Your CSA will be able to help you identify any concerning signs or signals indicating that your loved one may need professional assistance.

7. Is my loved one struggling with their spirituality?

Spirituality varies from person to person and is often something we can’t see or measure. As people age, they may start to consider their spirituality more deeply than before. As you speak with your CSA, be sure to ask about any signs or signals that could mean your loved one is examining their spirituality. In any case, they can provide you with local resources and even conversation starters to assist with this sensitive topic.

8. How vital is End-of-Life planning?

While discussing end-of-life plans can be emotional, opening up about the details can bring peace to the entire family. Your CSA can recommend exceptional attorneys that will ensure all essential documents are in place and executed correctly.

9. Who should handle my loved one’s finances?

From retirement tax to estate planning, senior citizens have an array of financial documents to attend to. To ensure that these issues are properly handled, work with your CSA to find qualified professionals to assist your family with all of their financial needs.

10. Will insurance cover my loved one’s care?

Navigating insurance is always difficult, and many times benefits go unused. Work together with your CSA to discuss all of your loved one’s available insurance options and benefits so that your family is able to fully utilize these essential resources.

While the tips above are a great starting point, it is important to remember that every case is different. You will probably have many other questions and concerns to bring up with your CSA or other assistive care professionals. If you’re considering home care for a relative, we encourage you to get in touch with a CSA and start the conversation today. Homewatch Caregivers of Dallas is available to guide you every step of the way.
