Tavolo Italia – Elegant, Casual Italian in Frisco, TX

Good Italian restaurants seem to have had difficulty keeping a foothold in Frisco. But Tavolo has become one of our favorite restaurants and we’re hoping they have a good long life.

Having been to Italy a time or two, I can’t get enough of the food. Pair it with the right wine and atmosphere, and Italian imbues a sense of a long slow meal, enjoyed with fiends and family.

And Tavolo is the perfect setting for that.

The Tavolo Experience

Tavolo is elegant but relaxed. The interior is beautiful but without pretense. Tables are close together, as you would expect in an old-world Italian restaurant, but you’ll have no trouble moving through them.

The bar is beautiful and anchors the restaurant right in the middle but does so without disrupting flow from one side to the other.

The owners put an appropriate level of attention into every detail to create a crisp, but warm, and welcoming atmosphere.

The patio has become our favorite in Frisco Square. It’s covered and facing west but still gets ample shade from the surrounding buildings without blocking the view completely. And there is something about a patio right on the sidewalk that adds that extra “Italian flare.”

We’ve are also pleased with the service. On each of our visits, the wait staff have been exceptional. They are always friendly and helpful but don’t hover. Our wine glasses stay full, and our questions are always answered with a smile.

The Menu

Brush up on your Italian! The food has proper Italian names but the descriptions are in plain English. They cover the courses with a variety of authentic Italian food and  familiar dishes.

We’ve been to Tavolo three times now and tried something different on each run. So far, everything has been excellent, which is great news for your next trip to Tavolo, but it makes it hard to know what to recommend. But we’ll give it a try!

For an appetizer, try the Salumi E Formaggio. The assortment of dried and cured meats, cheeses, olives, and accompaniments is an excellent way to start a long meal. Pair it with a glass of prosecco to kick things off.

For the salad course, I’d recommend the Caesar. It is hands-down one of the best I’ve had anywhere.

Moving on to the main course it gets more challenging but here are a few to help you out.

Bistecca Con Patate Fritte: Grilled Hangar Steak, Crispy Potatoes, Sauteed Spinach, Balsamic Demi Glaze. I love this dish because I get some meat and potatoes but it never leaves me feeling stuffed, just satisfied. It’s also good for sharing.

Spaghetti E Carbonara:Crispy Pancetta, Scallions, Roasted Cipollini Onions, Poached Egg, Pecorino Romano, Locally Grown Basil, and Beef Steak Tomoato. A traditional Italian dish that I’ve been enjoying since the early 90’s but just seems to be coming on in the US.

Lasagna Alla Bolognese: House Made Bolognese, Besciamella, Pork Sausage, Mozzarella. A classic and familiar Italian dish with Tavolo’s own uniqueness thrown in.

For dessert, go for the cheesecake or Tiramisu, you can’t go wrong!

The Wine List

I love Tavolo’s wine list! They have a good selection without paralyzing you with options. It’s also reasonably priced.

They cary a solid array of Italian wines but have others as well. Though we’d recommend sticking with the Italian wines.

One of our favorites on the menu is the Allegrini Palazzo della Torre, Veneto (a.k.a. Baby Amarone). It’s an excellent mid-priced bottle of wine (also offered by the glass) that was just made to go with Italian food!

The next time you’re looking for a good Italian Restaurant in Frisco, give Tavolo a try!
