This week we explore our role in parenting young athletes in Frisco. Recently, I sat in on a Positive Coaching Alliance session at my daughter’s middle school. Honestly, it made me pause and check myself as we enter into another season of school athletics and recreational sports.

How do we ensure that our kids come away with the physical, mental, and character-building opportunities that we hoped for when we signed them up for sports? Learning how to fail, being accountable to their team, developing strong relationships, learning respect… And hopefully, that great feeling of success and accomplishment.

Sometimes we have to remind ourselves why we’re all doing all of this, right?

In the thick of it, it’s easy to get carried away. I’m guilty of it myself. I like to yell, coach, and correct. But, when your kid thinks back on this stage of their life, do you want them to cringe and remember those awful rides home from the game?

I hope you don’t. I hope we all want more for our kids. We want them to be respectful young adults who treat opponents, officials, coaches, and teammates with respect, remembering that there are many sides to sports.

Grace and growth are things I want to see in my children, win or lose.

Enjoy this episode of Hustle & Pro, and please leave a comment with your thoughts on parenting and sports. We’d love to hear them.
