We’ve talked (a lot) about the insanity that was 2020. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be okay if I never hear the phrase “new normal” again. And there’s another pandemic-era word that used to only remind us of a certain Friends episode, but now has an entirely different connotation: pivot.
Friends fans, can you ever hear the word pivot without hearing Ross’s voice? In any case, we’ve had to do that — a lot. For some, all of this pivoting took a toll on our mental and physical well-being. Many of the things we normally would have done to make ourselves feel better were inaccessible.
Have you heard that pandemic-spurred plastic surgery is a thing? The aesthetics industry says that cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery have boomed in recent months as a form of self-care. For many, choosing to undergo a cosmetic or surgical procedure to enhance their sense of well-being was not only empowering in a season where we had little control but also newly convenient.
Pandemic-era cosmetic procedures continue to rise and surprise, and 2021 is shaping up to be, perhaps, the most unique year yet for the aesthetics industry.

There are three primary reasons cosmetic procedures are currently on the rise. Curious what they are?
The Zoom Boom
Dr. Sean Hill, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon at Lone Star Plastic Surgery in Frisco, says the “Zoom Boom” is definitely in effect at his office. With people now seeing themselves on screen for hours a day, there’s greater scrutiny of the fine lines and wrinkles.
Dr. Hill shares, “We’ve welcomed a number of new patients who have never done anything in cosmetics before (Botox newbies, Filler newbies). Also, returning patients are adding supplemental treatments because suddenly they’re seeing themselves on Zoom and they’re hyper-aware of things they never noticed before (Crow’s feet, facial wrinkles, double chin, jowling).”
Referred to as “above the shoulders” treatments, brow lifts, lip injections, botox, and other confidence-boosting procedures have become as normal as getting a mani-pedi.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 15.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2020 alone. Rhinoplasty (a nose job) was the top cosmetic surgery in 2020, with more than 352,000 surgeries performed. The society also reports that Botox was the most sought-after injectable treatment with more than 4.4 million procedures performed.
Hey, we get it. It’s why not long ago we shared practical ways to look your best while Zooming. Now, while we’ve largely returned to normalcy, it’s doubtful that Zoom meetings will go away. I think we’ve fully “pivoted” and learned to appreciate the flexible (pants optional) nature of screen meetings.
Downtime a-plenty
As many people continue working from home, Dr. Hill says that many patients are recognizing an unexpected benefit when it comes to getting plastic surgery. People who are working remotely can recover without taking as much time off or having to let anyone else know about it.
When someone undergoes a procedure that typically has a three to four week recovery, now they’re back working remotely on their laptop within a week. Patients are able to discreetly wear compression garments at home and turn their video off for virtual meetings if needed.
At Dr. Hill’s Frisco practice, many women have chosen to reclaim their confidence by rejuvenating their bodies with Mommy Makeover surgery. These personalized combination procedures address each woman’s specific areas of concern, helping them reclaim their prepregnancy bodies.
We all know how women like to multi-task and be as efficient as possible… Combining multiple procedures into fewer visits or taking the plunge for the longer-lasting results of surgery — versus treatments that only tide them over for a few months is out — rather, more women are opting to get several procedures done at once before they plan a vacation or return to an office.
Even masks are procedure-friendly, as swelling or bruising post-treatment can be concealed on the nose, lips, or cheeks. Medical-grade chemical peels, lip treatments, a liquid facelift, why not?
Hello World
So maybe we’re not entirely out of the woods, but 2021 seems to have us headed in the right direction. When things began to open up, did you feel any pressure to come out a better version of yourself in some way? Maybe in better physical shape, donning a new haircut…something?
Dr. Hill says in recent months he has sensed a bit of urgency from patients wanting to look better now that it’s time to get back to travel, work, events, and other activities. He shares, “In the last month or so, in particular, I felt a rush from patients who were ready to get ready for post-COVID travel plans or anticipating a return to the office.”
And what better way to reunite with the world than with maskless, brightened skin and a plump lip line, right? It’s quick and easy to look your best by taking advantage of nonsurgical treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal filler injections, and medical-grade chemical peels.
When a facelift or neck lift is too extreme, but your lower face, jawline, and neck are starting to show your age, there’s EmbraceRF, which offers noticeable firming and contouring with minimal downtime and no scars. Dermal fillers provide instant volume to smooth creases, folds, and wrinkles.
A simple, affordable, skin rejuvenation treatment sought by many of Dr. Hill’s patients is the chemical peel. Most often used on the face, neck, chest, and hands, Dr. Hill offers only medical-grade peels, which are available in a range of formulations to address signs of aging, sun damage, acne, or other concerns. He’ll personalize your peel to your specific goals, desired downtime, and the condition of your skin.
