Call us biased, but North Texas is one of the best places to live. We have a long history of caring citizens, quality education, rapid growth, and a robust economy.
But as the region continues to grow, so do the needs of those facing imbalances in income, racial equity, and educational and economic opportunity. Data suggests these needs will only increase. But the future of North Texas can remain bright.
Communities Foundation of Texas works side by side with caring donors, dedicated nonprofits, philanthropy-focused businesses, and civic leaders to help build communities that thrive for all.
What is the foundation of a thriving community?
Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) believes a thriving community is one where all people have equal access to good jobs, strong relationships, transformational educational opportunities, quality health care, and safe neighborhoods.
With the support and involvement of several well-known Dallas business leaders, CFT was founded in 1953 as the Dallas Community Chest Fund to provide a safety net for social-service agencies in Dallas.
Through the years, they assumed some of the region’s more challenging needs, understanding their donors’ charitable intent and connecting them with organizations making a positive difference.
In 1981, to reflect the broader scope of their impact, they changed their name to Communities Foundation of Texas. Today, they’re one of the largest community foundations in the nation in terms of assets managed, gifts received, and grants awarded.
Communities Foundation of Texas has awarded over $2 billion in grants since its founding in 1953.
The public foundation professionally manages more than 1,000 charitable funds for individuals, families, companies, and nonprofits and runs several key initiatives like CFT’s North Texas Giving Day, Educate Texas at CFT, and the W. W. Caruth, Jr. Fund at CFT.
Building Thriving Communities for All
We each have our favorite nonprofits that we invest in and support, and we can also achieve incredible impact for our community when we pool our resources together and invest in the future.
Communities Foundation of Texas stimulates creative solutions to key challenges in our community, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to lasting impact. They believe that when communities thrive, giving does too.
North Texas Giving Day
Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day is an 18-hour online giving event designed to empower every person to give back to their community by supporting local nonprofits and causes they care about in one easy-to-use platform.
The event helps build awareness and support for nonprofits like nothing else. In 2019, $50 million was raised through more than 169,000 gifts benefiting nearly 3,000 local nonprofits, bringing the eleven-year total to over $290 million for our community. North Texas Giving Day is the largest community-wide giving event in the nation.
Since its inception in 2009, this online event has transformed from an idea to help raise awareness of nonprofits, to a movement that has ignited a broad culture of community-wide giving. In 2020, North Texas Giving Day is September 17. Watch the 2020 Kick-Off Video!
