Legends Season Wraps with Casino Night and Cuban Q&A

May 15, 2019 by Kelly Walker

The Texas Legends know how to keep the fun rollin’ even after the final whistle blows on the court.

During a recent Casino Night presented by Healthcare Highways, the Legends family enjoyed a little blackjack fun, live music, and food at Lava Cantina. It was a night to celebrate the closing of the 2018-19 season and usher in the much-anticipated 10th season of the Texas Legends in Frisco, Texas.

legendsJust a few steps into the door and we were welcomed with a smile and, of course, a joke from Donnie Nelson, who has a way of always making you feel like old friends instantly.

We joined in on the fun at the tables, where I played my favorite – roulette. Did I rake in the most ‘play’ money at the end of the night? No, I didn’t come out ahead but I had a good time losing.

Down to my last chip, I went with a hunch from Spud Webb, and it did not pay off, but then again, when it’s play money, it’s all good. I’ll take Spud’s advice anytime.

Texas Legends_Casino_Night_2019-1Spud and Donnie weren’t the only powerhouses from the Legends’ front office in the house.

Del Harris, Mark Cuban, Al Whitley, Evan Wyly, and Malcolm Farmer also showed up to enjoy the party, shake hands, take pictures and talk basketball with the crowd.

Mark Cuban has ownership in the Texas Legends, who are the NBA G-League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks. Mark took a few minutes to do a Q and A to talk to us about Dirk, about the importance of how the two teams work together, and about the thrill of the offseason. Cuban says,

Every summer is so exciting for me because that’s when I get to do my work. I hit Donnie up two to three times a day. We’ve got a nice young core and we’ve got the space to build on top of it.

We’re all still coming off the ‘Dirk high’ of an emotional month of April, when Dirk Nowitzki, after 21 years with the Mavs, played in his final home game in the American Airlines Center and his last NBA game the following night in San Antonio.

Mark Cuban TXL_Casino_Night_2019-58Cuban told a story about back when he first bought the team and took on Dirk after practice. So maybe Cuban snuck in a layup and a shot and only let Dirk get a dunk in before calling the 2-1 victory, but a win is a win, right?  I like it, Mark. Well done.

Besides eating and play-gambling fun, the annual Partner’s party celebrates the organization’s partnership with sponsors who help to pull all the community-focused initiatives together. It takes teamwork to provide the fun atmosphere inside the arena as well as the incredible focus on giving back to programs for children, military, first responders, animal adoption, and more.

This team we have here is special. They’ve recently been named the NBA G League’s Franchise of the Year and Legends’ President and General Manager Malcolm Farmer was named as the Team Executive of the Year for the 2018-19 season. Work hard, play hard.
