Gold Cup Doubleheader at Toyota Stadium Today

Toyota Stadium’s primary tenant, FC Dallas Major League Soccer, is currently on a break before resuming play next Saturday, July 22 in Montreal, Canada. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be soccer in Frisco this weekend.

Today, July 14, Toyota Stadium hosts a doubleheader in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, an international tournament which features teams from Central, North, and South Americas. Friday’s festivities on World Cup Way start at 6:30pm when Costa Rica, better known as The Ticos, faces French Guiana in the final group stage match for both sides.

Then, at 9 PM, Canada and Honduras, Los Catrachos, a team with a current FC Dallas player, defender Maynor Figueroa as one of its regular starters, square off in the nightcap.

These four teams are all vying for the same prize: a spot in the Gold Cup semifinals next weekend. One of those semis will be played next Saturday, July 22, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. For those who have never attended an international soccer match in a competition like the Gold Cup, it’s a total sensory experience that’s worth checking out.

Whether it’s taking in the tailgating scene in the parking lots surrounding venues like Toyota Stadium, or sitting down to watch the spirited competition between the four teams who have something important to play for, the atmosphere inside the stadium for the soccer doubleheader will be electric.

FC Dallas games are great entertainment, but Major League Soccer plays a regular season of more than 30 games. The season starts in March and doesn’t end until December when the league champion is crowned at MLS Cup, so not every game carries immense weight.

However, teams in the Gold Cup, especially those in the final part of the group stage, are basically playing win-or-go-home matches. So, Friday’s game will have a bit of an extra edge… something which will only add to what is already a great event with immensely talented players at a top-notch facility.
