Week one of Frisco High School Football was largely successful. Combined, six schools went 4-2, and even those that found themselves on the wrong side of the won/loss ledger impressed on offense or defense. Here’s a recap of Week 1 action, with a look at the Week 2 match-ups for all of Frisco Independent School District‘s teams.
Week One Re-cap (4A)
L Frisco Liberty (0-1) vs. Mesquite Poteet (1-0)—20-49 (FC Dallas Stadium)
Mesquite Poteet roared out of the gates to a commanding 36-7 halftime lead before Liberty made adjustments in the second half. Coach Zimmerman’s RedHawks tightened up their defense in the last half, yet still couldn’t get anything done offensively against the powerful Poteet squad.
Liberty’s Rodray Perkins only rushed twice, but netted 77 yards and a touchdown. Felton Byrd plucked three passes from QB Connor Robison—averaging an amazing 24 yards per reception.
Up Next: Vs. Wylie East (0-1)—Wylie East lost a nail-biter 23-22 against Red Oak last week. Liberty has the advantage of playing at home, but this should be an excellent matchup.
W Frisco High (1-0) @ N. Forney (0-1)—45-28
The spread offense might still be the dominant formation, but Coach Gibson’s Raccoons are doing just fine running the wing. The game really wasn’t as close as the score would indicate. The ‘Coons tallied five rushing touchdowns from five different players.
QB Jake Battaglia threw for 205 yards and one TD, and somehow managed a rushing TD with -4 total rushing yards. Lucas Reynolds and Max Steitle combined for 166 yards while Dayton Bush and Rasheed Kilpatrick only touched the ball once apiece, but scored each time.
Up Next: Vs. Trophy Club Byron Nelson (1-0)—Byron Nelson snuck past Keller Timber Creek 16-13 last week, but will need to improve both offensively and defensively to take down the multi-faceted Raccoons.
W Frisco Centennial (1-0) vs. Denison (0-1)—45-27 (Frisco ISD Memorial Stadium)
Denison’s Denard Whitfield rushed for 174 yards on 20 carries yet Centennial still managed a win—in convincing fashion. The Titans beat Denison at their own game as both Tapiwa Mudehwe (5 attempts, 127 yards) and Kamari Burnett (11 att, 82 yds) punished Denison on the ground.
QB Kelly Cordova threw for 169 yards and two TDs with DJ Jackson catching both scoring passes. Devin McCord and Eric Robeson combined for 94 receiving yards.
Up Next (GAME OF THE WEEK): Vs. Lake Dallas (1-0)—The Falcons will visit Centennial as the Titans’ pre-district schedule doesn’t get any easier.
L Frisco Heritage (0-1) @ Lovejoy (1-0)—42-62
Thanks to a three-touchdown outburst in the second quarter of Frisco Heritage’s season-opening loss to Lovejoy, the Coyotes were within striking distance of the mighty Leopards, 34-28.
But the high-octane Lovejoy offense proved too much for Heritage, as the Leopards put up 14 points in both the third and fourth quarters to highlight the eventual 20-point win.
Although starting off the season 0-1 is never the game plan, the Coyotes finished last season at 1-9, so a 42-point outburst is a sure sign that Coach Che Hendrix has his squad headed in the right direction.
QB Malik Walker threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns with Keaton White snagging 12 passes for 133 yards and two TDs. Running backs Malik Walker and Sean Jones combined for two TDs and over 200 yards on the ground.
Up Next (Thursday Sept. 5): Vs. McKinney (0-1)—Heritage will look to match last year’s win total against a tough McKinney squad that put up 368 total yards of offense in their 10-point loss to Mansfield Legacy.
Frisco Wakeland (0-0)—Week 1 BYE
Up Next: @ Richardson (1-0)—The Wolverines get 2013 started with a bang, traveling to take on the undefeated Eagles.
3A
W Frisco Lone Star (1-0) vs. Fort Worth Castleberry (0-1)—48-14 (FC Dallas Stadium)
After one quarter, it appeared the Lone Star Rangers might be starting off their season 0-1. Trailing Castleberry 14-10 heading into the second quarter, both the Rangers’ offense and defense returned from their summer slumber.
Lone Star would go on to score 38 unanswered points, led by RB Ramon Harris’ 130 yards and two touchdowns plus a receiving corp that accumulated 229 yards, thanks to Chase Moake’s pinpoint passing and ability to find Jordan Jones and Austin De Leon in open space.
Up Next: @ Whitesboro (1-0)—Whitesboro dominated Fort Worth Christian last week, scoring doube digits in every quarter save for the third. However, the Rangers will be a much more formidable opponent.
TAPPS/Private
W Frisco Legacy Christian (1-0) @ Lutheran—54-8 (Richardson Berkner Stadium)
With so many powerful 4A schools—as well as one 3A—within Frisco City limits, Legacy Christian can go unnoticed. However, if they continue to dominate as they did against Lutheran last week, they will be impossible to ignore.
The Warriors started their season strong as they dominated Lutheran on both sides of the ball with 27 points in each half, while surrendering just 8 points in the final minutes of regulation.
Jack Henry Knight led the charge with 97 yards on the ground and one score. Schuyler Crouch caught three total passes and scored on two of them.
Up Next: Vs. Fort Worth Temple Christian (1-0)—Legacy might have their hands full as Temple Christian dispatched of last week’s foe—A Plus Academy, 47-0—even easier than the Warriors outclassed Lutheran.
