I watched a beautiful old house, complete with porch and wooden swing, stand empty for some time on historic old Main Street. I wondered what may be in its future. Now, to my utter delight, I walk through the doors and can’t help but get swept up in the moment, imagining that I may be standing on the set of Oleson’s Mercantile from Little House on the Prairie.
Two ambitious local moms, Blythe Weston and Monika Rubin, have now become the proud proprietors of this wonderful “farm to fork” indoor market, and have restored the house into Frisco’s newest organic and general store.
On our first meeting, I was immediately drawn to their warm smiles and charming welcome at Frisco Farm Stop.
Pouring me a cup of fresh organic coffee, the ladies pulled up chairs. “It’s been an interesting road to here,” they explain, laughing out loud, and they enjoy unfolding the story of how they met. It all started with boy meets girl, when their kids Landon and Blakelyn, both now 9 years old, attended kindergarten at nearby Rogers Elementary. A friendship blossomed and they were soon talking their moms into play dates at each other’s homes.
In the weeks and months that followed, Monika discovered Blythe’s passion for making honey, housing bees in her backyard. She made jars for friends and neighbors, and people just kept coming back for more. Monika, with a background in business development, saw an opportunity and encouraged Blythe to go bigger. They designed a brand, ‘Bee True’, and decided to tour, selling the product at local Farmers Markets.
While at these markets, they quickly built relationships with other vendors and farm owners. Before long they realized the next obvious step was to rent premises with a commercial kitchen and allow the business to grow, also expanding Bee True into a line of beauty products.
They shared a clear vision of offering products in a Neighborhood General Store setting that you don’t find at your regular grocery store. Somewhere that served as an anchor to the local community. A place which would draw people in, and somewhere they could also hang out, “so the idea of including a coffee bar was a no-brainer,” Monika explains.
They went about researching real estate in the immediate Frisco area and, after perusing various locations, the perfect option came up in fall 2014 on Old Main Street when they found the house. Signing in October, the premises opened for business in December 2014.
The feedback so far has been phenomenal. This is what people want. Eating fresh and healthy has become a lifestyle change for many, and Frisco Farm Stop provides a variety of products that meets those needs. Farmers within a 100 mile radius supply the store with a whole range of items beyond just your usual fruit and vegetables. There is fresh pasta, meat, dairy, grains, nuts, grass fed meats, and, their most popular item, organic non-graded eggs.
Monika and Blythe want to ensure a transparency in their process, and are committed to sourcing local fresh and organic products. They make a point of visiting any suppliers first, and taking the product home and sampling it before deciding to sell. Their goal is to stay as local as possible and provide seasonal produce.
Exploring the halls of this former home, now a fully operational store, you can also find jarred goods like peppers and olives, Texas honey, dressings, and marinades. Not to mention the homemade salsa, organic pasta, natural beauty products, and gifts. There is something for everyone.
At the back of the store is a spacious coffee bar with plenty of seating and a selection of pastries, fresh rolled oats, or granola. Or you can enjoy outdoor seating on the wraparound porch. It’s quaint, cute, and oh-so-inviting for a peaceful cup of coffee or pit stop with the family while strolling Main Street.
