Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Founded in 1970, Earth Day is celebrating it’s 45th year in more than 192 countries.
To honor not only our planet, but our local Frisco area, we put together a list of creative ideas for family fun to celebrate. Make your house more eco-friendly with these easy ways you can inspire awareness of our impact on the environment.
- Trade and swap toys: Coordinate with other parents in your neighborhood or your child’s class. This is a great way to reduce the number of items you buy, and to recycle what might be away.
- Have your kids cut their school flyers paper into squares: Staple one corner, and now they have their own scratch pads for notes, reminders, and doodles.
- Decorate with permanent Sharpies those yogurt, cottage cheese, and sour cream containers and use as indoor herb garden containers. Art + spice in the kitchen!
- Start a “Project Box”: Empty tape spools, foil candy wrappers, paper coffee cups, plastic silver ware, rubber bands, water bottles, cleaned ziplock baggies, and more… anything that is recyclable goes into the box and is the foundation of an art creation, a science project, or a rainy day play adventure.
- Have a monthly family “game night”: Power off all electronics. Play Scrabble, Twister, Monopoly, or Clue by candlelight and make some memories.
- Have a bunch of old t-shirts? No matter the size, just sew up the bottom band and you have reusable grocery and shopping bags.
- Make a bird feeder: Use a couple of empty 2 liter soda bottles plus twine, chopsticks, and birdseed. You’ll have saved two more bottles from a landfill, plus a host of feathered friends all summer long.
- Plant flowers that attract honey bees: Having bees buzzing around to act as pollinators brings life to your yard and makes flowers and other plants lush and abundant. Head to the nursery with your kids and make a day of planting wildflowers, fruits and vegetables either directly in the ground or create a container garden. By letting your yard grow a little wild, you’re providing water and shelter for bees. Great flowers for our area are roses, foxglove, clover, marigolds.
- Harvest the Rain: With all the rain we’ve received this spring, wouldn’t it be nice to save some for the hot, dry summer ahead? Frisco is working in partnership with Rainwater Solutions to offer discounted Ivy rain barrels for a limited time as part of their second annual Rain Barrel Sale and Distribution Event.
