Frisco Celebrates Diversity and Cultures at MLK Scholarship Gala

January 1, 2019 by Nicole Barron

On Friday, January 11 at 7:00 pm, Linking Cultures of Frisco will host the “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Dinner and Gala” with the express focus on connecting our community in awareness and appreciation of our racial and ethnic backgrounds which make us all unique and strong.

The annual event launched on Martin Luther King Day in 2011. The purpose is to not only honor Dr. King’s legacy but to fulfill Linking Cultures of Frisco’s mission to thrust our youth towards their destiny.

With a vision of “unity in community,” this Frisco based non-profit is sponsoring its 9th Annual Dr. ML King Jr. Essay and Oration Contest for high school seniors in Frisco ISD with a theme of – “Many Cultures… One Dream.”

2019 MLK Oration and Gala Flyer

With a record number of student applicants this year, representing all backgrounds, the finale will present the top five Frisco ISD finalist competing for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. This will be a night full of culture and celebrations.

Proceeds from ticket sales will be used toward scholarship awards.

  • First Place-$5000
  • 2nd-$3000; and
  • 3rd-$2000

The oratory competition will take place at Verona Villa, and ten thousand dollars in Scholarships will be awarded. The Dinner and Gala is a formal attire event and promises to be an invigorating evening of performing arts, music, dancing, plus a riveting rendition of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech presented by the renowned orator, Steven Lowenstein.

… I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low. The rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will he able to transform the
jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day….” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – I HAVE A DREAM

Linking Cultures of Frisco seeks to unify the community through this event and to remind us that there are no dividing walls.
