Last week’s Lifestyle Frisco Game of the Week came within a hairsbreadth of moving a Frisco ISD school into a first place tie atop District 9-4A. Three teams are now tied for third place, and one school claimed its very own share of second place. Here’s a breakdown of how all of your favorite Frisco High Schools fared in Week 8.
L Frisco High (3-2) @ Frisco Centennial (4-1)—28-35
A 21-point outburst by the Titans proved to be the difference maker in a hard-fought Centennial win that provided them an undisputed hold on second place in District 9-4A.
The Raccoons drew first blood thanks to a 12-yard run by Max Steitle (155 yds, 2 TDs) in the first quarter. QB Kelly Cordova (314 yards of total offense) answered in the second with a 28-yard scoring run. Frisco High reclaimed the lead as Rasheed Kilpatrick (86 yds, 2 TDs) caught a 15-yard scoring pass from QB Jake Battaglia (6/21, 109 yds, 2 TDs). But a 73-yard run by Kamari Burnett followed by Cordova’s second 28-yard run of the quarter, and the Titans were back in control.
The third quarter passed with neither team finding the end zone. The fourth quarter proved a dramatic ending to a well-fought game. Trailing 21-14, Steitle tied it up with a two-yard run. Two quick scores by the Titans gave them the lead for good, despite a late Raccoons touchdown pass to Kilpatrick.
W Frisco Heritage (3-2) Vs. Frisco Liberty (1-4)—48-24
In a game that they were supposed to win, the Coyotes did just that—and in convincing fashion.
Up 28-7 at the half, and 42-7 after the third quarter, Heritage kept pace with the playoff picture as they now share a three-way tie of third in the district.
The Coyotes’ ground attack—led by Kene Nwangu (176 yds, 2 TDs) and Sean Jones (135 yds, 3 TDs)—were too much for an assailable Liberty defense that had surrendered an average of 291 yards rushing per game over their four previous contests.
RedHawks’ RB Chris McPhaul (78 yds, 2 TDs) and RB/WR Rodray Perkins (111 total yards of offense).
L Frisco Wakeland (3-2) @ The Colony (5-0)—22-28
At the end of the third quarter, it appeared as though the Wolverines were on the verge of dealing The Colony Cougars their first lost of the season.
Up 22-13 at the start of the fourth quarter—and with Cougar’s star running back Bryan Hammond forced to the sidelines with a knee injury—the Wolverines were licking their chops. After all, a win would have pushed them into a tie for first place in the district. Instead, they have to settle for a three-way tie of third place.
The best teams get great performances from unlikely heroes; and for The Colony, it was backup running back Alec Gibbons (125 yds, 2 TDs) who clinched a playoff berth for the Cougars thanks to his two fourth quarter scoring runs.
Wakeland could do little against the Cougars run-stuffing defense, but QB Jackson Lamb (175 yds passing) managed some damage in the air despite tossing two picks. RB Noah Anderson (41 yds) was the only Wolverine with much success against a dominant Cougars defense.
L Frisco Lone Star (0-3) @ Argyle (2-0)—7-53
The Argyle Eagles, the Associated Press’ second ranked 3A team in Texas, lived up to their considerable hype as they made quick work of the reeling Rangers.
The Eagles of Argyle used their relentless ground game to get the scoring started early as they led 24-0 after the first quarter. Seven players ran the ball at least twice, and when the smoke settled, the Eagles combined for 389 yards rushing yards.
Argyle’s defense did the rest as they put the squeeze on Lone Star standouts Jason Shelley (9/19, 91 yds passing), Ramon Harris (44 yds rushing) and Michael Bordes (53 yds receiving, TD). The Rangers could only muster 185 yards of total offense against an Argyle defense that is the finest in District 10-3A—and one of the best in the state.
W Frisco Legacy Christian (3-0) Vs. McKinney Christian (1-2)—49-22
Legacy Christian remained undefeated in TAPPS D-III 2 as they used a strong fourth quarter to squelch any potential McKinney Christian rally.
After the Mustangs’ Caleb Wysong pierced the end zone with a 46-yard run, the Eagles found themselves tied up 6-6. Moments later, QB Ryan Davis (9/11, 3 TDs) did what he does best—pile on the points. Davis hit Thomas Dreger for a 12-yard score and P.J. Snider for a 21-yard scoring reception. Trailing 21-6 at halftime, the Mustang’s Jamie Greenwell caught a 78-yard TD pass from Wysong to make it a one-possession game to start the fourth quarter.
However, in the final frame, RBs C.J. Encalade (77 yds, TD) and Chase Eisenmann (60 yds, TD) each found the end zone to put the game on ice for the Eagles.
