Frisco High School Football: Week 10 and Game of the Week—Frisco Legacy Vs. Colleyville Covenant

November 7, 2013 by Timothy Howell

Since the playoff spots have all been dished out, Week 10 is all about the various bracket seeding scenarios.  As all four playoff bound teams are split evenly into Division I or Division II of the 2013 UIL Playoff Brackets, no team can afford a loss, as this could affect not only their seed, but their  potential postseason matchups.

Frisco High (4-2) Vs. Prosper (0-6)—7:00 @ Frisco ISD Memorial Stadium

The Raccoons can clinch the top seed in Division II if they can get the win this Friday—so you’d better believe their star players will see plenty of action.

Naturally, you always want to control your own destiny, so look for the Raccoons to pull away with a win over the Eagles. Look for team leaders Jake Battaglia (1,140 total yds of offense, 16 TDs) and Max Steitle (1,042 yds, 10 TDs) to have big games against Prosper as a win anoints them as the number one seed coming out of District 9-4A (Div. II).

Frisco Centennial (5-1) Vs. Frisco Heritage (3-3)—7:00 @ Toyota Stadium

CENvHER

Since the Titans held on for the win against the previously undefeated The Colony last week, they are in good shape to snatch Division I’s top seed.  Should Heritage pull of the upset, the Titans can still manage the top spot should the Cougars fall to the winless Little Elm Lobos.

I just don’t see an upset in the works here. To my mind, The Colony’s run-stuffing defense will neutralize Caleb Chapman (as much as possible) and even without Bryan Hammond, the Cougars have enough offense to beat the Lobos.  Same goes for Centennial, as they have the look of a team getting hot at exactly the right time.

Led by QB Kelly Cordova (2,625 total yards, 30 TDs) and arguably the district’s most diverse offense including WRs Devin McCord (753 yds, 6 TDs), DJ Jackson (454 yds, 8 TDs), Jackson Grimes (354 yds, 5 TDs) and RB/WO Kamari Burnett (807 total yds, 7 TDs) look for the Titans to come swinging right out of the gates.

Frisco Wakeland (4-2) @ Frisco Liberty (2-4)—Thursday 11/8 @ Toyota Stadium

Much like Heritage, the RedHawks have a chance to affect the playoffs by playing the role of spoiler.  In order for Wakeland to claim the top seed in Division, they’ll need a win against Liberty combined with a Frisco High loss.

Wakeland’s only losses in district were to The Colony and Frisco High—two of the district’s best teams. And that lone Centennial loss? That was handed to them by none other than the Wolverines in a Week 7 beat-down, 21-0.  As for Liberty, they have managed their two wins against the 1-5 Prosper Eagles and the 0-6 Little Elm Lobos.  I just can’t see the RedHawks pulling off an upset over Wakeland this week—as the Wolverines just have far too many weapons such as RBs Brent Altieri (670 yds, 7 TDs) and Alex Marr (461, 8 TDs) to name a few, at their disposal.

Frisco Legacy Christian (3-0) Vs. Colleyville Covenant Christian (3-0)—7:30 @ Comstock Field

This week’s Game of the Week TAPPS 2-III top two teams as Legacy Christian (7-2, 3-0) and Colleyville Covenant Christian (6-3, 3-0) will play with the district’s top seed at stake.

Legacy Christian’s offense averages 336 yards per game, with Covenant Christian just behind them, at 301 ypg.  Both teams prefer to grind out the yards on the ground rather than in the air.  However, they both boast a QB that can get it done with his feet or his arm. For the Cougars, it’s all about their two chief playmakers, Zach Carnes and Michah Lutz.

Carnes has thrown for 770 yds with 8 TDs and 7 INTs, and has gained 557 yds with five more scores on the run.  Lutz is the team’s leader in receiving yards (477, 6 TDs) and is second to Carnes in rushing yards (399, 10 TDs). These two will pose a sizable threat to the Legacy Christian secondary.

Another viable weapon that the Cougars possess is backup QB Michael Hudson. Although not the threat to run that Carnes is, Hudson is less interception prone (24/33, 413 yds, 7 TDs 0 INTs). Legacy has an equally multi-faceted attack, but with even more stars.

The offense is led by QB Ryan Davis (1,434 total yds, 22 TDs). The versatile Davis has many weapons at his disposal. WRs Christain Gregory (328 yds, 7 TDs) and P.J. Snider (190 yds, TD) are his favorite passing targets, but if they are double teamed, he can always pass the rock to RBs C.J. Encalade (491 yds, 6 TDs) or Chase Eisenmann (390 yds, 7 TDs).  This should prove to be a an excellent game that may go down to the wire.  I look for Legacy to pull off the win in front of their home crowd, securing the top-seed in their district.

Because no one can make it to EVERY Frisco ISD game,we’ve got you covered. Be sure to check back next Tuesday for a review of all of Week 10’s matchups, plus the Lifestyle Frisco 2013 High School Football Playoff Preview.
