The first round of the 2014 UIL Boys Bi-District has come and gone, as the Girls’ Regional Quarterfinals.  Let’s a look at which Frisco ISD schools are advancing to the Area round and the Regional Semifinals.

Boys Bi-District Review

W Frisco Liberty (18-10) Vs. Highland Park (27-6)—58-55

flhs redhawks

In a stunning upset over 10-4A’s top-ranked team, the Liberty RedHawks were able to outlast the Highland Park Scots in over time of the bi-district matchup.

Highland Park’s Derek Cahn (27 pts) and Evan Beucler (12 pts) both had big games, but the combination of Ashten Bloom (18 pts), Trey Curry (14 pts) and Carter Brown (11 pts) proved too much for the Scots to overcome.

And to think that the RedHawks were smoked by the now-eliminated Frisco Raccoons in the UIL play-in game just a week ago.

Up Next (Area): Vs. Dallas Kimball (21-7)—Fri. 2/21 @ 8:30 PM Carrollton Ranchview

W Frisco Heritage (26-3) Vs. Carrollton Creekview (13-16)—56-51

HeritageCoyotes

In a game much closer than anticipated, the Coyotes rode the rhythm of a strong first quarter all the way to a win.  Creekview’s Deandre Abram (23 pts) scored at will, but the threesome of Wesley Franklin (19 pts), Jordan Box (12 pts) and Jordan Marshall (10 pts) proved too much for the Mustangs.

Up Next (Area): Vs. Dallas Woodrow Wilson (22-8)—Fri. 2/21 @ 7:00 PM Carrollton Ranchview

W Frisco Legacy Christian (15-6) Vs. McKinney Christian (3-6)—52-46

LCAAside from a dominant 19-5 second quarter by McKinney Christian, Legacy outscored its opponent 47-27 en route to area round win last Tuesday.

The Eagles were led by Mitchell Wilson’s 14 points, with Tom Mask chipping in 12.  Multi-sport star Luke Baumgardner netted seven points.

Up Next: (TAPPS Second Round): Vs. Yavneh Academy (31-4)—Sat. 2/22 @ 8:00 PM (Location TBD)

L Frisco High (18-10) Vs. Carrollton Newman Smith (20-6)—68-73

FriscoCoons

After a resounding win in last week’s UIL play-in game to determine their playoff seed, the Raccoons were riding high and thinking of a deep postseason run. But Carrollton Newman Smith had other plans.

Led by Deondre Burns’ 21 points, the Trojans stumbled out of the gates but by halftime held a nice nine-point advantage.  Up 54-35, it appeared the game was in the bag for Newman Smith. A furious 33-point fourth quarter outburst had the ‘Coons within five points, but they fell short of an amazing rally.  Frisco was led by Nico Cavacho’s 14 points, with Bradley Mason (13 pts) and Jayson Singletary (12 pts) reaching double-digits too.

Girls Regional Quarterfinals Review

W Frisco Liberty (30-3) Vs. West Mesquite (28-7)—54-42

flhs redhawks

Trailing 14-13 after the first quarter, the Lady RedHawks turned to their two leaders to take control of this regional quarterfinal against the Lady Wranglers. As they have done all season long, Kayla Mundy (University of New Orleans) and Bria Frierson (UNT) answered the call.

Mundy’s 20 points combined with a baker’s dozen from Frierson helped to lead Liberty as they outscored West Mesquite 41-28 over the game’s final three quarters.

Up Next (Regional Semifinals): Vs. McKinney North (29-4)—Fri. 2/21 @ 7:30 Culwell Center, Garland

W Legacy Christian (16-14) Vs. Bullard Brook Hill (4-6)—39-30

LCA

The Lady Eagles won easily in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicates.  Up 22-7 at half, and 34-15 heading into the fourth quarter, Legacy cruised thanks to big nights from Lauren Foster (18 pts) and Lauren Buffington (11 pts).

Up Next: (TAPPS Second Round): Vs. McKinney Christian (18-6)—Sat. 2/22 @ 5:00 PM (Location TBD)

L Frisco Lone Star (21-11) Vs. Celina (30-6)—43-54

RangersB-Ball

The Lady Rangers’ impressive run to regional quarterfinalist has come to an end at the hands of District 10-3A rival Celina.Texas State commit, Whitney Apari, led Lone Star in points scored with 17.  Zoie Miller (10 pts) also scored in double-digits.

L Frisco Centennial (23-12) Vs. The Colony (23-9)—36-39

TitansB-Ball

Although it took an overtime to do it, The Colony used a dominating defense to limit the Lady Titans to just 36 points.  The Lady Cougars received double-digits points from Jade Williams (16 pts) and Libby Waddell (10 pts) while holding Centennial’s Jaysa Cooper (8 pts) and Cydney Sutherland (8 pts) from causing too much damage.
