The idea of making their own dog food arose from the many big brand dog food recalls… dogs were not only getting sick, but some were dying as well. Risking their own dog’s health was just not something they wanted to do, so after researching ingredients and experimenting in the kitchen, the doggie meatloaf (they call it the Dogilloaf) was born. It was the founder’s son that sparked the idea to sell Dogilloaf after he went through the Young Entrepreneurs Academy here in Frisco last year. He prompted the team to start selling it from home with a web site launch on June 21, 2013.
So, how is Dogillo different from a Eukanuba or Science Diet brand of dog food? To start with, the Dogillo brand has absolutely no preservatives or additives. You can tell the difference by the fact that the Dogillo brand, because it lacks preservatives, has a very short shelf life compared to the big brands that consumers can pick up at the store. This is also the reason why they produce it at home and don’t market to stores. It’s always made fresh and is delivered to your door on Tuesday and Friday.
According to Dogillo founder Jack Scheffera, “We don’t let it stand for a couple of days and we don’t pre-make anything. Each batch is made by hand. It’s like takeout for dogs!”
Jack went on to tell us, “Another big difference is the fact that we use only human-grade ingredients. A person could just as easy consume Dogillo – but would probably have to season it to taste. Dogs can be finicky eaters, and especially small breeds, love Dogillo! The Dogilloaf can easily be mashed up for older dogs that have trouble chewing.
