Have you noticed the cool “brickLAB” logo at the corner of Stonebrook Pkwy and Teel Blvd and wondered to yourself, “What in the world is a brickLAB?
I’m glad you asked because you don’t want to miss what they’re doing over there.
Imagine hundreds of thousands of LEGOS. Imagine a creative space where kids socialize, collaborate, and play together while engaging in educational experiences!
Sounds like a fun business to run, doesn’t it? It is, according to founders Jenni and Mike Jensen, Frisco residents who are dedicated to building both creativity and community.
brickLAB gives builders of all ages a place to explore from idea to creation, be it in a camp, class, or an open play session. The lab-like environment offers computers, specially designed tables and chairs, stop motion film rooms, and a place for parents to hang out.
Mike describes brickLAB as a place where “education and entertainment collide” and ultimately, he wants kids to feel it’s their own space to play, learn, and collaborate.
The environment is great fit for elementary, tween, and teen builders, but Mike emphasizes that his business is a place for everyone. “We say it is for builders aged 3 to 103 because even adults have creative spirit!”
Build Your Own Adventure
The “Maker Space” is brickLAB’s signature offering, where guests can build and explore at their own abilities and pace. With thousands of bricks (including sets and mixed pieces), the Maker Space is a LEGO lover’s dream come true!
Builders have the option to purchase their completed creations or return them for a small cleaning fee. The Maker Space is designed for both individual exploration and collaborative play with small groups of friends or family. It’s a place to build connections – both the LEGO kind and the relationship kind!
brickLAB makes building convenient and cost-effective through its monthly membership program (hourly rates are also available). Members receive all kinds of cool perks, like access to the Maker Space and discounts on camps and after-school programs.
Want to learn about one of the most popular trends in the LEGO world? Spring Break and Summer Camps focus on Stop Motion Film, a fun, accessible way to explore the arts! Students can also experience Robotics, Programming, and of course, lots of building!
Jenni and Mike Jensen opened brickLAB in November of 2018. Frisco residents for almost fifteen years, Mike has a background in petroleum engineering, while Jenni is the founder and President of Frisco’s beloved Hope Park, which offers a playground experience for all abilities through adaptive equipment and sensory play areas.
The Jensens are highly committed to the special needs community and dedicated to making Frisco a better place to live for all residents. brickLAB reflects this passion.
Brick by Brick
So how did Jenni and Mike build their brickLAB? Mike has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. He was particularly drawn to the LEGO concept and looked at several franchises, but felt they were missing a stronger educational component.
Ultimately, he decided they could build their own business model — a place that fosters not only creativity and fun but provides dynamic learning opportunities as well. And thus, the unique brickLAB concept was born.
The past two years have been eventful (to say the least) and 2020 brought unique challenges to brickLAB. However, the team remains more dedicated than ever to bringing education and play to Frisco!
Over the past year, Mike and Jenni have successfully pivoted their model to the current environment, with COVID-19-related health and safety measures in place and new offerings. They invite the community to come in and take part in the creative magic happening at brickLAB!
