Frisco Families’ Guide to Texas State Parks

Everything’s bigger in Texas—including the adventures waiting just a road trip away. Whether you’re raising little explorers or just looking to unplug and reconnect, Texas State Parks offer the perfect backdrop for unforgettable family memories. From sandy shores to desert canyons, here’s how Frisco families can make the most of our state’s natural treasures.

Why State Parks? Why Now?

Texas is home to 85 state parks spread across more than 630,000 acres—and each one tells a different story. For families in Frisco, these parks are more than just scenic getaways; they’re opportunities to teach kids about nature, history, and the beauty of our home state. Plus, kids 12 and under get in free!

Start Close to Home

You don’t have to drive far to start your adventure. Within a two-hour radius of Frisco, you’ll find over a dozen parks perfect for weekend escapes. Here are a couple that come highly recommended:

Eisenhower State Park: Just an hour north of Frisco, this park is ideal for a quick day trip or a weekend by the water. Think sandy beaches, shaded trails, and plenty of space for kids to roam. Try the Ike Hike and Bike, and make a stop at the picturesque “Lover’s Leap.”

Ray Roberts Lake State Park: A Frisco favorite! Less than an hour away, Ray Roberts offers a natural escape packed with outdoor fun. Hike, bike, swim, fish, paddle, or simply relax and enjoy the scenery—whether for a day trip or a weekend getaway. It’s the perfect blend of adventure and tranquility, right in your backyard.

Bucket List-Worthy Parks Across Texas

Once you’ve explored the local gems, it’s time to hit the road. Here are a few must-visits for your family’s Texas State Park bucket list:

Balmorhea State Park: Here you can dive into the crystal-clear water of the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool. Swim, scuba dive, or just relax under the trees. This West Texas destination is easily paired with Big Bend Ranch State Park (which also made our list down below).

Palo Duro Canyon State Park: The second largest canyon in the country lies in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. Explore this breathtaking natural wonder by foot, mountain bike, horse, or car. During the summer, enjoy a performance of TEXAS Outdoor Musical.

Big Bend Ranch State Park: For the ultimate Texas road trip, head west along the Rio Grande in far west Texas, on the U.S.-Mexico border.. The rugged beauty and star-filled skies are worth every mile. This remote park features rugged mountains, steep canyons, amazing views, unparalleled night skies, and solitude in a high desert setting.

Mustang Island State Park: Combine beach time with wildlife watching on this unspoiled barrier island park along the Gulf Coast. Play at the beach (swim, surf, build a sand castle), camp, picnic, fish, kayak, bird watch (especially during spring and fall migrations) and geocache. Bonus: It’s a nostalgic favorite for many Texans.

Tips for Planning Your Park Adventures

  • Get the Guide: Download the Texas State Parks app or check out the Official Guide online – both of which offer all the details you could ever need.
  • Annual Pass Perks: For $70, you get unlimited access to all state parks for a year—perfect for families planning multiple trips.
  • Pack Smart: Bring sunscreen, bug spray, snacks, and plenty of water. And don’t forget a camera to capture those “first hike” or “first fish” moments.

Let’s Make It a Frisco Thing

We all love 30A and Disney World, but imagine your kids growing up with memories of roasting marshmallows under the stars, spotting deer on a trail, or learning to skip rocks on a quiet lake. Sometimes, simplicity should win.

Have a favorite park or a hidden gem you’ve discovered? Share it with us—we’d love to feature local families and their adventures in future posts!
