Keep up with the action all season long: 2014 Frisco High School Football Schedules and Results
In Frisco Heritage’s five-year history—prior to last week’s bi-district matchup against Wylie East—they had never won a playoff game. This, of course, is because they had never made the postseason two weeks ago. Since then, it’s been nothing but wins. Now, as District 9-5A’s sole surviver, not to mention the lone Frisco ISD team still in the hunt for State, they are now just one victory away from a berth in the UIL Regional Finals.
5A Division II Region II Area Round
W Frisco Heritage (10-2) VS. Terrell (8-4)—Fri., 11/21—43-20
For the area round matchup between Heritage and Terrell, all eyes were on the Coyotes’ Kene Nwangwu. After all, all he did in Heritage’s bi-district beat down of Wylie East was rush for 381 yards and seven touchdowns. An unbelievable night, even if we’re talking video game numbers.
Nwangwu (154 yds, 2 TDs), seemed to pick up where he left off; putting together yet another historic performance. QB Malik Walker was as smooth as efficient as his reputation would suggest, connecting on 13/20 passes for 133 yds and 2 TDs. WR Bubba Ogbebor hauled in six passes for 77 yds and two touchdowns, and K Bryce Crawford connected twice—once from 28 yards out, the next 38 yards out.
The Coyotes didn’t exactly hang 70 as they did in bi-district, but they scored more than enough to cruise to their second consecutive win in their inaugural postseason tournament. After surrendering 63 points in bi-district, the Coyotes’ defense rebounded well, limiting Terrell to just 20 points on 253 yards of total offense.
5A Division II Regional Semifinals-Preview
Frisco Heritage (10-2) VS. South Oak Cliff (11-3)—Sat., 11/29 @ 2:30 PM @ Cotton Bowl
The South Oak Cliff Bears hold the unusual distinction of dropping their first three games of the season, only to win their next eleven straight. To say the Bears are hot, is akin to saying that Black Friday is a touch over sold. After all, South Oak Cliff is 5A’s number one scoring team, averaging 49.7 points per game.
Over their 12 games, they have averaged more total yards than all but three teams in the area (471.7 yes per game). And their numbers are hardly skewed in the postseason either, as they have put up just over 40 points per contest.
The Bears score relentlessly, thanks to their triumvirate of QB David Johnson, WR J.F. Thomas, and RB Jordan Stevenson. Johnson (2,652 yds, 36 TDs, 7 INTs) is the number seven passer in the area, Thomas (1,384 yds rec., 22 TDs) is the second-ranked receiver and Stevenson (2,268 yds, 28)—you guessed it—is the number one rusher in 5A.
South Oak Cliff dispatched their bi-district foe, Lancaster, in thrilling fashion, 37-34. In last week’s area round, they beat Marshall 55-35. One pattern of note is that the Bears do surrender plenty of yards defensively. However, when you average well over 40 points per game, you can get away with it.
Terrell’s Dawyona Tucker, who rushed for 198 yards on 21 carries against the Heritage’s defense last week, might actually aid the Coyotes in game-prep for S. Oak Cliff’s Stevenson, who averages over 10 yards per carry. Just as the Bears team lives and dies with their three star players, so does Heritage.
Both team’s defenses will surely be tested, but if Malik Walker can find his number one receiver Ogbebor, and if Nwangwu continues to thrash the opposition’s defense, the Coyotes’ initial postseason scamper might just keep on rolling.
