CoServ Begins Distribution Line Upgrades, Unrelated to Brazos Transmission Project

CoServ Electric will begin distribution line upgrades as part of a larger project now underway on Main Street between Legacy Drive and FM 423. This work is unrelated to the Brazos transmission project. New poles and lines are required to serve the general load needs of members in the area west of the Dallas North Tollway and north of Lebanon Road. These poles will replace existing poles for an approximate 1.2-mile stretch on the south side of Main Street, from Legacy Drive to just east of Calimar Drive at the entry to The Trails subdivision. This action will also reduce the number of poles needed to support these new lines.

Beyond the increased capacity, the new Hendrix circuits bring greater reliability via spacer-cable construction. They also eliminate conductor slapping and resist damage in sustained winds. When this project was in its conceptual stages, CoServ planned to build separate double-circuit overhead lines on traditional-style new poles on the north side of Main Street. Since then, CoServ learned that existing infrastructure precludes doing so.

Under the new plan, 60-to-80-foot poles, constructed of concrete and spaced an average of 264 feet apart on Main Street’s south side, will be installed. The old poles will be removed after the new lines have been energized, and the communications utilities attached to the old poles have transferred their wires to the new poles. The poles will be buried about 14 feet deep. From Legacy to Teel, the poles (most of which are 65- to 75-feet-tall) will support four circuits; from Teel to Calimar, three. Near the entry to The Trails, the two circuits go underground. When complete, the number of poles lining this stretch of Main Street will be reduced to 27 from 44.

CoServ plans to have crews conducting standard prep work in front of The Trails in the next two to three weeks, and also on Main Street, doing preliminary work on the existing overhead line. This includes digging an underground vault and running a new line through existing infrastructure. This line will emerge and connect with an overhead existing line, just west of Calimar Drive, where one circuit will cross the street to a new pole, and the other will continue west. Concrete poles will begin arriving on-site the week of June 30. Crews will begin installing the new poles the week of July 7.

Barring weather and other unforeseen circumstances, the entire project should be complete by early to mid-September. The new circuits will draw electricity from the Roman Juarez substation.

CoServ will communicate about the Hendrix improvement with area legislators and with members via a webpage and FAQ on CoServ.com and via letter/email to members living within a half-mile of the line’s footprint.
