Frisco High School Basketball: Lone Star Earns Regional Semifinal Berth

Once the Frisco Liberty Lady RedHawks were eliminated last week during the regional semifinals, it meant the end of the line for Frisco Lady’s high school hoops. It did not, however, mean farewell to Frisco’s 2013-2014 UIL Basketball playoff run all together.

Two Boy’s teams had survived the first two rounds and were all set for their regional semifinal’s matchups. Of those two schools, one was left standing. Here’s a breakdown of how Frisco Heritage and Frisco Lonestar fared.

L Frisco Heritage (27-4) Vs. Dallas Kimball (28-7)—41-64

Over the last two years, the Dallas Kimball Knights have won a state championship (2011-2012), and finished as the state runner-up last season. Not too shabby. In this week’s regional quarterfinal, the Knights looked poised for yet another trip to state.

Led by their deadly threesome of Dondre Carter, Jawun Evans and D’Angelo Allen—who combined for 41 points between them—Kimball over-powered a very strong Frisco Heritage team which is no easy task.

The Coyotes’ Jordan Box (16 pts) and Wesley Franklin (10 pts) did their thing, but the Knights made sure that the rest of the team was kept at bay.  Leading 32-24 at halftime, Kimball pulled ahead for good after a 19-8 third quarter run that raised their lead to a robust 21-point advantage.

W Frisco Lone Star (25-6) Vs. Decatur (23-6)—60-50

To secure last week’s area championship, Frisco Lone Star had to fight from behind and needed an intense last-second rally to put away the Stallions of Triple A Academy.  By comparison, the regional semifinals were a breeze for the Rangers.

Tied at halftime, 29-29, the Rangers tightened up their defense, disrupting Decatur’s shot rhythm. The Eagles had trouble putting a run together, and the Rangers kept pouring in the points.  A 16-11 third quarter run pushed their lead to a tenuous five-point margin, but more of the same in the fourth put the game on ice for the Rangers.

Freshman Cameron Gooden led the Rangers in scoring, with 18 points, and was perfect from three-point land.  Zach Brown rained down 15 points and nabbed 9 rebounds.  Decatur’s Cain Lowe led all scorers with 24 points, but outside of his shooting prowess, the Eagles were held in check offensively by an outstanding defensive effort from the Rangers.

Up Next (Regional Semifinal): Vs. Brownsboro (16-13)—Fri. 2/28 @ 8:00 PM Texas A&M-Commerce
