Second largest amount collected in 28-year history
(DALLAS) – The Dallas Morning News Charities (The Charities) completed its 28th annual campaign, raising $1,684,955 from 1,837 donors to benefit agencies that serve the poor, hungry, homeless and help rehabilitate in our community. The campaign began Nov. 15, 2013 and ended Jan. 31, 2014.
Last year, the campaign raised $1,100,618 from 1,948 donors. Since the campaign began in 1986, The Charities has raised nearly $26 million from more than 49,000 donors.
This is the 14th year The Charities raised more than $1 million and the first year to receive a single donation of $500,000 – the largest gift in its 28-year history. The donation was given by the Katherine Carmody Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee. This trust was created in April 1957 by Katherine Carmody of Corsicana to support charitable organizations in the state of Texas.
“This campaign ranks as one of our most successful. I am gratified by the generosity of our many donors, and thank them for their commitment to help the homeless and hungry in our midst,” said Bob Mong, editor of The Dallas Morning News and chairman of The Charities.
During this year’s campaign, 25 nonprofit agencies geographically dispersed across North Texas received contributions. All administrative costs are paid by the Morning News in order that 100 percent of campaign contributions are distributed directly to recipient organizations.
Generous campaign gifts were received, including $125,000 from the J.L. Williams Charitable Foundation, $100,000 corporate gift from Contran Corporation, $100,000 anonymous gift, a gift of $75,000 from the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, a $25,000 transfer from the Betty MacArthur Estate, and $10,000 from the Granville C. and Gladys H. Morton Fund and both managed by the Communities Foundation of Texas. Other significant donors who gave $10,000 were Al Hill, Maverick Capital Foundation, Jim Moroney III, and several other donors who wished to remain anonymous.
