My dad visited recently, thanks to an unplanned overnight layover, and we had enough time the following morning to take him out for brunch before his outbound flight. I’d seen Chef in Blue Café and Crêperie mentioned in lists for local brunch and coffee shops, and I do love crêpes, so this was a perfect opportunity to try another local eatery.
The Chef in Blue occupies a cozy space in Frisco Village Plaza on Preston Road, in the same plaza that houses Tom Thumb. It’s a casual restaurant: order at the counter and the plates will be delivered to you. On that first visit, we were there on a Saturday morning, and it was bustling with friends and families enjoying their meals together.
How do you like your crêpes? Filled with savory goodness, or oozing with sweet deliciousness? They are all available here. It wasn’t easy to decide.
My husband and I employed our usual attack plan: each order a different one and share, getting the best of both worlds. We kept it simple for our first visit: one egg and cheese and one Nutella with banana. Both were served fresh, warm and oh-so-tasty. I admit, the egg and cheese was good, but the Nutella with banana, topped with delicious whipped cream, won my vote that morning. Who says you can’t have dessert for breakfast?
Even as we were ordering our breakfast-style crêpes, tempting offers under the ‘Specialty Crêpes’ portion of the menu had us planning our return trip, for lunch next time. And, sure enough, a couple of weeks later, we were back. This time we shared the Maya Crêpe (Mexican chorizo, pepper jack cheese, avocado, tomatoes, fresh cilantro, red onions, fresh spinach and amarillo hot sauce) and a prosciutto panini. The panini was good: just the right level of crispiness, and plenty of prosciutto-goodness. The Maya Crêpe, however, surpassed and won the ribbon for that meal. (Of course, my bias to crêpes may have tilted the scales.) The chorizo and red onion brought so much flavor, with just the right touch of zing, which was nicely rounded out by the avocado and cheese.
It was definitely worth the return trip. Other temptations on the menu still call to us, including the Frisco (baked chicken, fresh spinach and a creamy artichoke sauce) and the Chicken Pesto (baked chicken, mozzarella cheese, fresh spinach and a basil pesto sauce).
But, of course, you can’t really think about crêpes without thinking about the dessert variations: Lime cream, peanut butter with jelly and banana, apple cinnamon, dulce de leche, strawberry cheesecake, and the aforementioned Nutella, with bananas or strawberries. Chef in Blue is definitely a worthy contender the next time you feel like going out for something sweet.
In addition to crêpes, breakfast items include waffles, egg scrambles, and omelettes. If you’re stopping in for lunch, there are a variety of sandwiches, paninis, and salads to choose from. The menu is rounded out with quiche, soups, and bakery items: there’s something for everyone.
We’ll be back. There’s quite a few things on the menu that call to me. And not just the strawberry cheesecake and the apple cinnamon crêpes, although those do seem to call more loudly.
