Keep up with the action all season long: 2014 Frisco High School Football Schedules and Results
This past off-season witnessed a sizable change for Texas High School football in terms of redistricting. Texas joined Oklahoma as a state to feature the “6A” distinction, and every public school in Frisco ISD (save for Legacy Christian) was promoted to 5A status and shuffled into District 9-5A.
One school, Lone Star, makes the leap all the way from 3A! Regardless, and despite the surface changes, Texas High School football remains exactly the same, and 2014 promises to be just as exciting as last year’s edition—especially inside the friendly confines of the uber-talented Frisco ISD…Here’s a preview of the 2014 Frisco High School Football season.
9-5A
Frisco High Raccoons
2013: (9-4, 5-2) 4A DII Regional Semifinalist
Head Coach: Vance Gibson
Player(s) to watch: DB Dayton Bush, FB Lucas Reynolds
Under Head Coach Vance Gibson and his tough-to-defend Wing-T offense, the Frisco High Raccoons are no strangers to the postseason. Coming off back-to-back Regional Semifinals berths, the ‘Coons will need to find an answer to departed QB Jake Battaglia (Greenville College), and star RB Max Steitle, both of whom graduated in 2013.
If fullback Lucas Reynolds can not only make key blocks but pickup some of the slack that the Battaglia and Steitle departures bring, then look for the Raccoons to once again make the playoffs in 2014.
First Game: Thursday, Aug. 21 Vs. McKinney North @ Ron Poe Stadium
Frisco Centennial Titans
2013: (9-3, 6-1) 4A DI Area Finalists
Head Coach: Mark Howard
Player(s) to watch: RB Anthony Pegues, QB Court Walker
The Centennial Titans are consistent playoff contenders due to their balanced attack on both sides of the ball. 2014 shouldn’t be any different, as Head Coach Mark Howard once again has plenty of explosive athleticism with which to contend.
Sophomore QB Court Walker has some huge shoes to fill in replacing Kelly Cordova (McPherson College), but has all the skills necessary to be up for the task. Also make sure to keep an eye on speedy RB Anthony Pegues (4.4), who makes up for his slight stature thanks to his blazing speed.
With an OLB faster than most elite-level tailbacks in Brandon Anderson (4.4) and the grab-it-and-go skills of one of the finest WRs in the district in receiver Devin McCord (951 yds, 7 TDs), the Titans should certainly be in the mix for District 9-5A superiority.
First Game: Friday, Aug. 22 Vs. Mesquite Poteet @ Centennial High School
Frisco Wakeland Wolverines
2013: (6-5, 5-2) 4A DII Bi-district finalists
Head Coach: Marty Secord
Player(s) to watch: DB Trent Shaw, OLB Justice Williams
Similar to Centennial in that they have more than enough talent to prevent being one-dimensional, the Wolverines could be in a position to challenge for the 9-5A crown.
On offense, it all starts with the district’s returning rushing leader, RB Brent Altieri, who gained more than 800 yards with 10 TD a year ago, on his way to being crowned one of Lifestyle Frisco’s MVPs. For defensive leadership, you need look no further than LB Tanner Euting, who amassed 92 tackles during their 2013 campaign. DB Brent Shaw (4.4) uses his upper-tier speed to cover the entire field and rounds out a very solid secondary.
First Game: Friday, Aug. 29 Vs. Lake Dallas @ Wakeland High School
Frisco Independence Knights
2013: N/A
Head Coach: Kyle Story
Player(s) to watch: WR Myles Russell, WR William McCullum
Frisco Independence has the cards stacked against them. Being a first-year football program is challenging enough, but kicking off their inaugural season in 5A…well, that’s about as daunting a challenge as the Lone Star State can dish out.
That being said, the Independence Knights do have some talent with which to work. Aside from their strong receiving core in Russell and McCullum, Independence boasts DE Andrick Williams—a big, athletic presence that should help anchor a solid defense.
First Game: Friday, Aug. 29 @ Princeton @ Princeton High School
Frisco Liberty RedHawks
2013: (2-8, 2-5) Did not make playoffs
Head Coach: Chris Burtch
Player(s) to watch: QB Udgam Goyal, RB Chris McPhaul
Chris McPhaul and Udgam Goyal are the ignition that make the RedHawks offense go. Both are athletic, with preternatural speed and instincts. One question concerning first-year head coach Burtch is if Goyal’s arm has what it takes to instill a solid passing attack.
With nine starters returning on defense, the RedHawks will have a potent defense led by All-State OLB Jared Carmona. With his nose for the ball, Carmona will once again be called upon to snuff out the opposition’s running game, while using his speed to drop back into coverage to protect against the pass.
The only question for the RedHawks is how they will circumvent the loss of WR Rodray Perkins (Western State Colorado University).
First Game: Friday, Aug. 22 @ Lake Dallas @ Lake Dallas High School
Frisco Heritage Coyote
2013: (4-6, 3-4) Did not make playoffs
Head Coach: Che Hendrix
Player(s) to watch: WR Keaton White, DB K.C. Brown
The Heritage Coyotes have a very solid team, led by the multi-talented QB Malik Walker (4.6). Walker, a true option QB, can hurt you with his legs as much as he can with his arm. Walker is the district’s leading returner in passing yards (2,029, 23 TDs) but his over-reliance on his arm made him somewhat interception prone. However, with WRs Keaton White and Chris Baez as his favorite targets, look for he and the offense to have yet another big year.
RB Kene Nwangwu (4.4) will afford Walker time to find his targets as well as alleviate some of the rushing burden; in other words, in 2014 he won’t feel as though he has to do it all himself, and this should cut down on his interception rate considerably.
First Game: Friday, Aug. 29 @. Richardson @ Richardson High School
Frisco Lone Star Rangers
2013: (8-5, 1-3) 3A DI Regional Semifinalists
Head Coach: Jeff Rayburn
Player(s) to watch: WR Austin DeLeon, QB Jason Shelley
Amidst a bit of a QB controversy a year ago, Jason Shelley eventually beat out Chase Moake as the lead signal-caller. Moake, now at Legacy Christian, was a fine passer but didn’t have the complete skill-set that Shelley possesses. Shelley can do it with his legs (821 yards, 7 TDs) or his arm (1,346 yds, 12 TDs) and the only question is if his talent is ready for the jump to 5A.
Although he won’t “wow” you with is 40-yard dash times, RB Jordan Jones (4.8), is the type of rusher that punishes those that attempt to tackle him. On defense, the Rangers are led by the fearsome tackling machine duo of DBs Austin Bonner and the speedy Chris Miller.
First Game: Thursday, Aug. 28 Vs. Sherman @ Toyota Stadium
TAPPS DII-2
Frisco Legacy Christian Academy Eagles
2013: (10-3, 4-0) DIII State Semifinalists
Head Coach: Andrew Embry
Player(s) to watch: QB Ryan Davis, RB Chase Eisenmann
As a freshmen last season, RB Chase Eisenmann proved he has the ability to lead an offense on his own. QB Ryan Davis is a true option threat that has plenty of arm for big plays and more than enough speed to throttle a d-line.
Legacy Christian’s defense should be even better than last year’s thanks to the addition of converted QB Chase Moake to the already formidable linebacker core which includes standouts Josh Norris and Caleb Palmer, who recorded 105 tackles a season ago.
Despite the jump from DIII to DII in TAPPS this season, Legacy Christian should be well equipped for the pending challenges of Dallas Christian and Brooks Hill Guard.
First Game: Friday, Sept. 5 Vs. Cayuga @ Legacy Christian Academy
